Free Android and iPhone application offers real-time train tracking and journey planning.

New National Rail Enquiries app hits the top spot

National Rail Enquiries has launched a new mobile application for Android and iPhone smartphones, shooting to the top of the free apps categories on the first day of launch.

The NRE app aims provide real-time train progress information as opposed to being based on a timetable. The benefit is that passengers can be alerted to disruptions and plan their journey appropriately.

The application is said to be particularly useful for London commuters with journeys reaching Dockland Light Railway stations or London Underground Zone One stations. The NRE pointed out that the app is well timed given the extra four million visitors expected to descend on the capital during the Olympic games.

NRE app features include push notifications and alerts of any delays or service changes relevant to the passenger’s journey. There’s also the ability plan a journey even without an internet connection given the push notifications.

"We are confident that this app will help the growing number of smartphone users to quickly and easily access up-to-date information about train services while on the move," said NRE boss Chris Scoggins.

The National Rail Enquiries app is now available to download from the Apple App Store and Google Play. The free app features, as is so often the case, built-in adverts.
