The Nest smart thermostat and Protect smoke alarm are to receive support for communication with third-party home automation devices.

Google, which owns the home automation firm, has announced that it will begin adding products to a new ‘Works with Nest’ certification programme, aiming to make the Nest a hub for smart homes.

Products so far confirmed to work with the Nest include smart bulbs from LIFX, connected Mercedes cars, Jawbone Up smartbands and clothes dryers from Whirlpool, as well as products and services from Logitech, Chamberlain and If This Then That (IFTTT).

Examples of how the multiple products might work together include LIFX’s smart bulbs flashing red if the Nest Protect detects smoke, Whirlpool’s dryers keeping clothes fresh if Nest recognises that the homeowner is away from home and a Jawbone Up band automatically adjusting the heating down once it recognises that a wearer is asleep.

The IFTTT app will allow users to establish custom rules – for instance, an IFTTT rule could tell the Nest Protect to text a neighbour if high Carbon Monoxide levels are detected.

Google is also adding its own Google Now voice recognition service to the Works with Nest list, allowing users to speak to their thermostat via an Android smartphone to control various aspects of their smart home.

The news follows reports that Apple will release a platform designed to make an iPhone or iPad act like a ‘hub’ for smart homes, presenting similar third-party support for a variety of home automation devices.
