Microsoft made a number of mistakes with Windows Mobile, one of the firm’s directors has admitted.

Aaron Woodman, director of Microsoft’s mobile communications business, told PCR that the firm learned lessons from its previous smartphone operating system.

“Yeah, we made a lot of mistakes,” he said. “The first thing we learned is that the market is bigger than just the business user. When you think about the products we built, we really built for a customer who had since evolved. In the early 2000s the only people who could afford a phone with this kind of functionality were not like you and me; they were in suits, business-like.”

Woodman added that Microsoft had “tossed everything out” of Windows Mobile to create Windows Phone 7, including the 20,000 existing apps.

“A lot of people love rich functionality and definitely the services, but they were feeling overwhelmed. By reducing some of the complexities and by bringing those things together there came to be another choice, and there are a lot of people looking for that,” he said.
