Leading global software giant Microsoft has gone on the offensive by launching a legal battle against rival operating system Linux, according to The Inquirer.

The firm claims that the open-source software violates 230 of Microsoft’s OS patents. The Linux Open Office software is claimed to breach 45 patents, the user-interface of the Linux OS a further 64 whilst an additional 115 patents are said to be infringed by other aspects of the software.

It is believed that rather than enter into a protracted court battle, Microsoft will target individual companies by encouraging them to enter into patent deals with Microsoft itself. However, if this strategy proves fruitless legal action is still a possibility.
