Chief executive of online video firm joins software giant in top UK position

Microsoft snaps up Kangaroo boss

Ashley Highfield, boss of online video firm Project Kangaroo, has joined Microsoft as UK managing director of its online and consumer division.

Highfield was instrumental in the launch of the BBC’s iPlayer before joining Project Kangaroo – which is a joint online video venture between ITV, Channel 4 and BBC Worldwide, which will provide archived programmes to internet users.

Kangaroo itself is currently struggling with getting its web service up and running, though Highfield insisted this had nothing to do with his decision to leave: "It’s much more about the pull of the Microsoft job than the push of any frustrations here. If for any reason Kangaroo didn’t happen I’d be kicking myself forever that I hadn’t taken the Microsoft job."
