Microsoft is to release a smartwatch in October, new reports have claimed.

According to ‘trusted sources’ speaking to Tom’s Hardware, the rumoured wearable device is to support cross-platform connectivity with non-Microsoft devices – seemingly confirming previous reports.

This third-party compatibility will be extended by the use of open APIs.

The source went on to confirm further reports, including rumours that the smartwatch would adopt a more band-like form factor, resembling a 'flatter' version of Nike's Fuelband (pictured), and feature a display on the inside of the wrist, which apparently feels ‘a lot more natural’ to look at.

Additionally, the user interface for the device is said to be ‘slick’.

Concerning hardware, the device is said to contain 11 different sensors for tracking various metrics such as heartrate, with components provided by manufacturers including Texas Instruments and Atmel.

The release date for the wearable is said to be October, despite previous reports that it may see a summer launch.
