Computer giant’s ad business could not compete with Google

Microsoft makes a loss for the first time ever

Microsoft has made the first quarterly loss in its history.

The loss came after the computing giant wrote down the value of its online advertising business Aquantive.

After struggling to compete with rival Google, Microsoft wrote down the value of Aquantive by $6.2 billion. This led to a $492 million loss for the company in the three months to the end of June.

Microsoft made a profit of $5.9 billion in the same period in 2011. Although the company did well in other areas, there has been a decline in popularity of its Windows OS system.

Microsoft paid $6.3 billion for Aquantive when it took over the business back in 2007
