A version of the Linux Ubuntu operating system is currently in development for smartphones.

According to CNet, the new devices will utilise the same drivers as are found on Android phones but will use a native code rather than Java.

In terms of apps, the device will favour those written in HTML5 and native code, and in terms of interface, it will use swipe gestures similar to the Blackberry and Palm touch operating systems.

The software will debut at CES and will available in Q4 of 2013.
