LG has created an 18-inch OLED panel that’s flexible enough to be rolled into a cylinder measuring just 3cm across.

The firm has also demonstrated another 18-inch OLED panel that is transparent.

While the prototypes currently have a resolution of 1200x810, In-Byung Kang, LG Display’s SVP and head of R&D, stated that by 2017 the firm will have successfully developed an Ultra HD OLED panel more than 60-inches in size, which will be flexible and transparent.

The prototype OLED panel boasts a curvature radius of 30R, meaning it can be rolled up into a 3cm cylinder without the function of the 1200x810 pixel display being affected.

LG explains that the flexibility was achieved using a ‘high molecular substance-based polyimide film’ rather than conventional plastic.

Its transparent OLED panel was achieved by using the firm’s transparent pixel technology, which has a transmittance of 30 per cent. In comparison, existing transparent LCD panels generally achieve around 10 per cent transmittance.

"LG Display pioneered the OLED TV market and is now leading the next-generation applied OLED technology," said In-Byung Kang.

"We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40 percent and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market."
