Comet was boosted over the Christmas period by continued high demand for laptops and flat screen televisions.

The retailer saw growth of 4 per cent between November 1st and January 8th, with like-for-like sales increasing by 0.7 per cent.

Store sales rose by 6.9 per cent during the period, however – despite continued strong sales of laptops during the period – like-for-like sales within its stores were down 1.7 per cent on the same time last year due to a decline in notebook sales.

According to the trading statement the group saw growth against strong comparatives and 'very challenging UK market conditions'.

Speaking about the results, Kesa's chief executive, Jean-Noel Labroue said: "As predicted, the market conditions for our important peak trading period were difficult, particularly in the UK.

"However all our businesses delivered revenue growth with sales led by the continued high demand for flat screen televisions and laptops while sales of large white goods remained weak," added Labroue.

"Consequently, the small negative mix effect on margin as reported for the third quarter continued throughout the period."
