Israeli company PrimeSense says deals have been signed to provide Kinect-like technology in HTPCs by the end of the year.
PrimeSense vice president Adi Berenson told Engadget that the company has signed deals which will not only result in PrimeSense technology appearing in HTPCs by the end of the year but that at least one media company is preparing to launch a gesture-controlled set top box by summer 2011.
Like Microsoft’s Kinect, the PrimeSense device that will be used in the HTPCs will utilise a pair of 640 x 480 camera sensors to track the user’s position in 3D space. The system wont be a complete clone of the Xbox 360 system however, as design ideas provided by Microsoft wont be available to manufacturers such as the voice recognition and motorised tilt functionality.
Interestingly PrimeSense also claimed that the firm’s gesture recognition technology has improved since Microsoft froze out the feature set before incorporating into the Xbox 360.
The company has not, however, given any indication that it would provide or enable products that would allow users to add the motion-sensing system to existing systems.
