Crowd-sourced funding site Kickstarter will launch in the UK this autumn.

The announcement came in the form of a tweet stating: “People in the UK will be able to launch projects on Kickstarter starting this autumn! More info soon!”

Since the website’s launch back in 2009, it has funded over 20,000 projects.

Currently, Kickstarter uses Amazon Payments. This requires users wishing to set up a project to have a US bank account. A number of UK companies get around this problem by setting themselves up as a US company, or by partnering with an existing US company. This autumn should see the process become a lot easier for UK projects to get the go ahead.

There are currently 44 other crowd-sourcing sites already online in the UK, but with a number of Kickstarter projects receiving over $1 million each, it’s already become a well known website to the British public.

Video games have proved to be one of the most popular projects on the site. Wasteland 2 raised a whopping $2.9 million, and the UK-based company behind Carmageddon managed to raise $625,143 last month, enabling them to complete its sequel Carmageddon: Reincarnation.

Kickstarter lets backers of various projects to pledge different amounts of money in exchange for limited edition exclusive content and rewards.
