Steve Jobs has issued official advice to customers complaining about poor signal on the iPhone 4 when it’s held a certain way: “Just avoid holding it in that way.”
The Apple CEO’s advice, as reported by BBC News, follows numerous complaints on tech support forums, as well as videos on YouTube, that when the user’s hand covers the lower left corner of the phone, it loses signal.
The problem is thought to be caused by the iPhone 4’s stainless steel casing, which acts as an antenna.
In a statement, Apple said: "Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas.
“This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”
The latest iPhone was officially launched yesterday, with some customers queuing outside stores for up to 24 hours to get their hands on one of the devices.
