Intel has showcased a pair of devices designed for students at BETT 2014.

The 10-inch Intel Education Tablet and Intel Classmate PC laptop, which runs on Windows 8.1 and has a 10.1-inch display, are designed to “bring learning to life,” said Intel’s VP of sales and marketing.

“Education leaders everywhere are passionate about driving student achievement and encouraging lifelong learning,” John Galvin explained.

“At Intel, we believe the right technology can be transformative. That's why we are focused on designing tools that bring learning to life, helping to make students more engaged. The result is a future where people have the skills they need for opportunity and growth.”

The 10-inch Education Tablet runs on Android 4.2 ‘Jelly Bean’, and is powered by a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2520 processor. Other features include front and rear-facing cameras – the latter of which can record 1080p video – and the option for 3G connectivity. The battery life is estimated to be about 12 hours.

The Classmate is a Windows 8.1 laptop running on an Intel Celeron N2806 processor. The 10.1-inch screen can be configured as a touchscreen display, and a swivelling camera is integrated into the edge of the lid. Windows 7 and Linux options are planned for release later this year.

Both products are designed to survive bumpy school trips, with rugged designs and resistance to drops, water and dust.

Software-side, Intel’s Education Solutions suite of programs aims to provide extra educational functionality, while physical enhancements like a temperature sensor, magnification tool and accelerometer are included to assist with school projects and learning.

IT services provider Stone Group is also to produce a Classmate product, based on Intel's reference design. The only UK-made Windows Classmate, the Stone Classmate 3 can transform from a mini notebook form factor to a detachable tablet. The device is aimed at primary educators and specific secondary needs such as external visits for field trips or data collection excursions.

Release dates and prices for all of the products are yet to be announced.
