Intel is to invest $7 billion in upgrading four of its US manufacturing plants to produce 32-nanometre processor chips.

The improvements will take place in Arizona, New Mexico and at two facilities in Oregon and will be optimised to combine the 32nm production with Intel’s new Nehalem architecture.

“We’re investing in America to keep Intel and our nation at the forefront of innovation,” said Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini.

“These manufacturing facilities will produce the most advanced computing technology in the world. The capabilities of our 32nm factories are truly extraordinary, and the chips they produce will become the basic building blocks of the digital world, generating economic returns far beyond our industry.”
