Intel has signed a $50 million deal to acquiring ZiiLabs, a UK-based subsidiary of Creative Technology.
ZiiLabs is responsible for Android-optimised chip designs such as the ZMS-20 and ZMS-40. This agreement will grant Intel access to the company’s 3D graphics and media processing technology.
$30 million will cover asset sales and engineering resources, and the remaining money will be used for patent licensing in regards ZiiLabs GPU tech.
Sim Wong Hoo, CEO of Creative Technology said that: “The deal will give Creative increased flexibility with the ability to partner with multiple semiconductor companies on advanced design and process technologies, allowing us to mitigate risk while maintaining control over the long-term direction of our product portfolio.”
Best known for its audio products, Creative successfully sued Apple for $100 million in 2006 over the iPod copying interface elements from its MP3 players.
