PCR asks Tech Data’s consumer electronics and strategy opportunities director about breaking into the industry and his first job…

What’s your earliest memory from the channel?

I broke into the industry straight out of university in 2000; it was a straight choice between being an Apple sales specialist or a trainee accountant. The thought of being an accountant in the future put me off to be honest, so I took the opportunity straight out of university to join Tech Data, which was then Computer 2000. I joined as an Apple product specialist.

What’s the one gadget you can’t live without?

Definitely my smartphone – a Samsung Galaxy S4. I use it for everything, whether that’s sat-nav, Google Maps or email. I’m always in contact – I get a little bit anxious if I’m without email and so on for too long.

Are you tempted by the S5?

I am very tempted by the S5. I attended the launch of the phone at Mobile World Congress (MWC), and some of the functionality looked great.

How was MWC this year?

It was good, it was my first time there actually. I’m usually an IFA and CES kind of guy, but with the tablet side of things I went out there this year. It’s very different, it’s much more like a showcase with a lot of pre-planned meetings.

What’s your favourite TV show?

I’m a big Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad fan, but I also like typical cheesy American programs like Suits, which is quite amusing.
