Ikea has taken a shot at joining the tech industry, selling wireless chargers that can be fitted to almost any piece of furniture.
DIYers can modify their current furniture with a wireless charger, by using a specially made drill bit that creates a hole perfect for the charger.
The Swedish furniture retailer has also introduced the wireless charging capabilities to a new range of flat-packed tables, lamps, shelves, desks and more in the US, with prices starting at around $20.
Björn Block, range manager for lighting and wireless charging at Ikea, said: “We enable convenient charging throughout the home, designed for your personal needs. At the same time, we make homes more beautiful by minimizing the use of cords.
“Nobody likes cords, yet everyone wants a fully functional home. With our wireless chargers, it’s possible to have both.”
Each $30 charger is simplistically designed, and comes in a number of different colour woods in typical Ikea fashion.
All users have to do is put their drained device on top of the charger – there’s also a USB port on the side making it possible to charge additional devices as well.
The main problem with wireless charging is that it can apparently heat up the battery, shortening its considerably, according to Gizmodo.
