Microsoft said that the firm's recently released Internet Explorer 9 browser has been downloaded 2.35 million times in the first 24 hours.

Since the release, the firm clocked 27 downloads every second, said company representative Ryan Gavin on the Windows Team Blog.

"We want to thank everyone around the world for downloading IE9 and the enthusiastic reception. 2.3 million downloads in 24 hours is over double the 1 million downloads we saw of the IE9 Beta and four times that of the IE9 RC over the same time period."

In a follow up post Ziad Ismail explained to web developers how to implemented a 'pinned site' in IE9 which allows a web site to become a sort of mini application that can reside outside of the web browser.

Ismail said that websites experienced "up to a 50% increase in engagement when users pin their site with IE9" and that implementing a pinned site took about an hour of web development work.
