New Intel mobile platform to debut in 2008, hopes to bring WiMAX to the masses

IDF: WiMAX to become mainstream

Tech site Hexus.net has reported back from the Intel Developer Forum with the announcement of a new mobile platform – codenamed Montevina, which will supercede the current Santa Rosa platform in 2008.

It will feature a number of power saving innovations, icluding solid state memory, but the critical development could be the provision of WiMAX to the mass market.

Hexus speculates that, while mass WiMAX is Intel’s aim, all its partners in the mobile phone operator world who paid silly money for 3G licences a few years ago won’t be too happy if an alternative wireless network appears before they’ve had a chance to get some of that cash back.
