Firm stresses partners are building and distributing; not itself

IBM denies return to PCs

IBM has stressed that its ‘Microsoft-free’ PC initiative does not signal the return of the vendor to manufacturing or the system building of PCs.

"We’re not getting back into the PC business," stressed an IBM spokesman, after speculation became rampant.

He stressed that the firm would not be manufacturing, nor distributing the boxes; VDEL of Austria and LX Polska of Poland respectively handling those.

"We are extremely excited that we finally have an alternative document-management offering to Microsoft, based on open source, that fits our needs," said Aleksandar Spagnut, director of RusHotel, in a VDEL press release.

"We are already starting to implement this and are happy that IBM is again taking the lead in providing a total solution for the small and medium-sized market, based on open source."
