Taiwanese smartphone giant HTC has lifted the lid on a new mid-range Android smartphone, the HTC Explorer.

HTC described the 3.2-inch screened HTC Explorer as a device that expanded the market for advanced smartphones by offering an affordable easy-to-use smartphone.

The HTC Explorer is armed with a HVGA (480 x 320) display, 3 megapixel camera and a 600MHz processor. The device will also be offered in Metallic Black, Active Black and Metallic Navy when it arrives in Europe and Asia in the 4th quarter.

Engadget reported that the HTC Explorer would be priced below that of even the HTC Wildfire 2. The willingness of the firm to compete in the low-end Android area looks set to kick off further competition between rival mainland China phonemaker Huawei.

The HTC Explorer looks set to continue HTC's strategy of pitching somewhat above Huawei's aggressively provided Ideos range, offering a somewhat better build quality and HTC's Sense customisation.
