Hewlett Packard will reduce the workforce at its manufacturing capacity in Erskine, near Glasgow.

According to the BBC, of the 1,300 workers currently employed – mostly by third party employment agencies – only 600 will remain at the site. HP’s manufacturing capacity will be moved to the Czech Republic.

The move has provoked anger from local politicians.

“It is disgusting,” commented local MP Jim Sheridan. “These workers are being tossed aside after helping to make vast profits for Hewlett.”

“This is a disgraceful move by a profitable company,” said the MSP for Paisley South, Hugh Henry. “All sorts of promises were made to the local community to try to justify the destruction of the green belt when the factory was built.”
