Japanese social mobile games company GREE has set up a new studio in London.

Geared towards Western content and local social trends, the studio will be housed in a new office in Tech City, aka ‘Silicon Roundabout’.

UK chancellor George Osborne is expected to announce the arrival of GREE to London later today at the UKTI’s Global Business Summit.

The Japanese mobile giant will join a long list of established studios in the area, including Amazon, Facebook, and YouTube – who all announced their plans to open up offices in London last week.

Earning a label as a giant through acquisition, in July GREE acquired Korean social gaming firm Paprika Labs. The company also purchased US-based Funzio for $210 million in May.

“The formation of a UK studio is strategically significant on many levels. Primarily it will allow us to focus on Western content, keyed to local social trends, as well as tailoring content for global propositions,” commented UK GREE chief Ryotaro Shima.

“The London area known as Silicon Roundabout has grown rapidly as a community of digital innovators and creative forward-thinkers, making it the obvious location for GREE to base UK operations.”
