Age rating system for online content proposed

Government considers tighter internet control

The UK culture secretary has put forward proposals that would provide greater restrictions on the internet, in a bid to prevent children viewing offensive material.

The suggestions follows legislation of a similar type put in place by the Australian government.

Culture, Media and Sports Secretary Andy Burnham said: "You can still view content on the Internet which I would say is unacceptable. This isn’t about turning back the clock. The Internet has been empowering and democratizing in many ways but we haven’t yet got the stakes in the ground to help people navigate their way safely around it."
