Google's third quarter profits jump

Says Google+ social network now has 40 million users

Google unveiled third-quarter results that comfortably beat analyst expectations as the internet giant report revenue of $7.51 billion.

Sales rose 33 per cent to $9.7 billion and the firm gained in search and advertising market share against rivals Microsoft and Yahoo.

"We had a great quarter," said Larry Page, CEO of Google. "Revenue was up 33% year on year and our quarterly revenue was just short of $10 billion."

Page hailed the firm's new Google+ social networking platform which recently opened to the general public, revealing that the service now has 40 million users.

"People are flocking into Google+ at an incredible rate and we are just getting started!" he said.
