Google released a native Gmail application for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch but soon after removed the app from the iTunes App Store.

Earlier today we launched a new Gmail app for iOS. Unfortunately, it contained a bug which broke notifications and caused users to see an error message when first opening the app," said Google product manager Matthew Izatt.

"We’ve removed the app while we correct the problem, and we’re working to bring you a new version soon. Everyone who’s already installed the app can continue to use it," he added.

The iOS Gmail app is described as fast and efficient and will take advantage of touchscreen controls and notification capabilities for incoming emails and so forth. Previously iOS owners had to make do with the web-based Gmail interface.

The Gmail app requires iOS 4+ and should be back in the iTunes store shortly, Google said.
