Google has revealed a smartphone prototype that can scan its surroundings and create live 3D maps.

Called Project Tango, the smartphone can take 250,000 3D measurements in a second and has a Kinect-like visual sensor that can scan the room or area around it.

The 5-inch smartphone aims to achieve a ‘human-like understanding of space and motion’, according to Johnny Lee, the technical lead on the programme.

Google’s Project Tango smartphone will initially only be sold to developers. They are limited to 200, but due to ‘FFC restrictions’ developers who want a prototype must work for an incorporated institution or entity.

You can apply for a Project Tango smartphone by filling out this form.
