Google Maps users in the UK will be able to help provide detailed local information to the service.

Google announced today that its Map Maker edit tool has now been extended to the UK. The online tool allows users to contribute and edit map data for certain regions across the globe, meaning they can locate, draw, label and provide attributes for local map features.

By enabling users to more precisely map locations in and around their locality, it is hoped that the overall quality of the Google Maps service will be improved.

As part of the UK launch, Google Maps users and community members will converge upon Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes – the first place in the UK to test out and have contributions made to its area – for a MapUp workshop, allowing them to get first-hand experience with the new tool.

Google is also inviting Brits to share and update Google Maps by update their favourite shops in London’s Soho Square, improve driving directions around the country and providing useful updates to maps of their home towns.
