Spokesman says activations are not upgrades as Jobs claimed

Google hits back at Apple activations claim

Google has hit back after Steve Jobs said "we think we are ahead of everyone" at the recent Apple launch event

Jobs took the stage at the event in California with a jab at Google’s previously revealed figure of 200,000 Android device activations a day by quoting combined iOS device (iPad, iPhone, iPod) upgrades of 230,000 new devices a day and adding "we think some of our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers."

A Google spokesperson contacted Fortune and to counteract the claim, sayings: "The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services."

Apple has taken a more combative stance concerning competitors following the iPhone 4 "antennagate" issue but many competitors named by Apple have hit back at claims made by Apple including Blackberry, Motorola and Nokia.
