A Goggle engineer from the firm’s Chrome web browser team has released a Chrome extension that stops Facebook from tracking web pages the user has visited.
Brian Kennish created the Facebook Disconnect extension in a single day because "Facebook is notified whenever you visit one of the more than one million sites on the web that use Facebook Connect and has a history of leaking personally identifiable information to third parties," he wrote on the extension web page.
"Turn off the flow of your data to them!", he exclaims. The extension for the Chrome browser blocks traffic from third party web sites to Facebook servers. This system allows third party web sites to provide features for Facebook users such as promoting content or even signing in to comments systems.
Curiously the extension page is showing a solid five star rating based on 122 votes but not a single user or weekly install. Kennish told Tech Crunch that no one at Google asked or encouraged him to write the extension, citing the desire to "quell the desire to delete his Facebook account" as the reason for writing i.
