Gigabyte announced a new Intel Sandy Bridge based motherboard that features a built-in Intel SSD 311 Series SSD.
The Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3-iSSD motherboard is based on the Intel Z68 Express Chipset with support for the chipmaker's new Intel Smart Response Technology caching system with a built-in 20GB single level cell (SLC) SSD drive.
"We are thrilled to deliver the world's first motherboard to come pre-bundled with an IntelSSD 311," said Gigabyte sales and marketing boss Richard Chen.
The SSD module is plugged into a compact slot mounted flash onto the motherboard. Recent reviews of Intel's Smart Response Technology caching technology, such as Anandtech and Bit-tech, found that it did provide many of the performance benefits of SSDs without the cost of larger SSD drives.
Anandtech did, however, criticise the technology for only appearing on the high-end Z68 chipset, pointing out that enthusiasts in this market sector would likely opt for a full sized SSD anyway.
"Our customers realize the performance benefits that Intel Smart Response Technology has to offer, and the Z68XP-UD3-iSSD is the easiest way for them to instantly take advantage of the performance boost."
Gigabyte also unveiled a number of other motherboards in the GA-Z68XP-UD3 series without a bundled Intel 311 Series drive, potentially paving the way for third party SSD drives to be used.
