Gem restructures sales management team

Firm responds to customer needs and industry changes with new heads of sales for each channel

Distributor and retail services provider Gem has reorganised its sales team as distribution heads further into peak season.

The firm reports that it’s eager to stay ahead of the competition and keep pace with what customers need. Consequently, it’s made a number of changes to the structure and focus of its sales teams.

UK general manager Darren Houghten commented: “With the complex and diverse nature of our customers’ multi-channel strategies it is vital that we develop even closer relationships in order to fully understand every nuance of their businesses and capitalise on every joint opportunity.”

Gem now has a flatter management structure with appointed ‘Heads of Sales’ for each channel, which it says will allow for a far more intimate and detailed relationship to be created between the customer and Gem.

UK general manager, will remain fully responsible for the sales, purchasing and marketing functions within the Gem Group of companies (UK specific) with the heads of sales reporting to him as follows:

Neil Willerton
now moves into head of grocery sales, for accounts such as Tescos, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, Co-op and other key grocery accounts.

Rene Batenburg
has been promoted to head of retail sales for accounts such as DSG, Argos, WH Smith, Comet and HMV.

Colin Pelley
who has been with Gem for over ten years, has been appointed as head of etail sales, having full account responsibility for Amazon, whilst overseeing the strategic development for accounts including ShopDirect Group, Ebuyer, Dabs and Spicers, etc.

Paul Langley
will continue serving as divisional manager for Gem’s dedicated Xbox, Leisure and Business teams. As the only official UK distributor for Xbox, this role is pivotal in terms of Gem delivering continuous product and service differentiation to its valued Independent customer base.

Jo Gillman
is head of Gem Design & Sourcing. By creating the GDS Division within Gem, the firm says it can now harness its experience and expertise in Far East product sourcing and manufacturing, combined with its dedicated UK design team, to work closely with key customers on delivering a range of quality own-brand products.
