Mozilla?s browser confirmed as a world record breaker following 8 million downloads

Firefox 3 sets download record

Following its release last month, Mozilla’s latest update to its popular open-source browser, Firefox 3, has been confirmed as the new world record holder after securing over eight million downloads in its first 24 hours of availability.

The Guinness World Records body states that the actual number of downloads in the period was 8,002,530.

The USA topped the download ranks, with over 2.5 million users grabbing Mozilla’s browser. The UK ranked second with 295,000 and France third with 290,000.

Mozilla CEO John Lilly noted in his blog that people from over 200 countries downloaded a total of 83 terabytes of data. At peak, servers were making 17,000 downloads per minute helping Firefox’s market share to increase by four per cent worldwide.

Guinness World Records will present a certificate for the achievement in London next week.
