PCR publisher Andrew Wooden explains the reasons behind launching our very first awards dedicated solely to the many influential women working in the UK IT and tech industry, and why you can’t afford to miss the debut PCR Woman of the Year event...

On Friday October 17th at Home House, London, we’ll be holding the debut PCR Woman of the Year event. Why are we launching an event with awards just for females? I had some initial doubt that we should – mainly surrounding the possibility it would be seen as patronising. Why shouldn’t women be picking up gongs at ours or anyone else’s main awards ceremony anyway? No reason at all as far as we’re concerned, but the fact remains that at these industry back slapping gigs – and I’ve been to a few in my time – it’s almost always blokes getting up on stage.

In the huddles of networking events and the chattering herds of trade shows, the chromosome makeup is similarly XY. We’re told women make up 51 per cent of the population – but you wouldn’t know it from taking a snapshot of pretty much any industry get together.

I don’t know how male dominated the industry is as a whole – but I think it’s fair to say even with progress being made, it still swings in that direction. On this assertion alone, we think it’s worthwhile to provide a platform to celebrate the female role models we have in tech – the up and comers and the industry leaders.

The feature we ran in June 2014 highlighting the top 50 women in tech make up the finalists for our debut year – email me on Andrew.Wooden@intentmedia.co.uk to vote for who you think should win, or for details on how to join us on the day. And yes, men are allowed in as well.
