The European Commission has given a seal of approval to the Intel acquisition of security software vendor McAfee.

The $7.68 billion deal has been given the go-ahead with some conditions attached such as a commitment from Intel to ensure other security vendors have access to the systems necessary to implement security functionality on Intel processors and chipsets just the same as McAfee.

Intel was also required to promise that it would continue supporting rival chipmakers such as AMD. The Commission said that it would undertake monitoring to insure that Intel complied.

"The commitments submitted by Intel strike the right balance, as they allow preserving both competition and the beneficial effects of the merger," said EC competition boss Joaquín Almunia.

"These changes will ensure that vigorous competition is maintained and that consumers get the best result in terms of price, choice and quality of the IT security products."
