Total book sales increased by four per cent in 2012

Ebook growth boosts UK book sales

New research from the Publishers Association reveals that ebook sales continued to rise in 2012, with the format now accounting for 12 per cent of the market.

The success of eReaders such as the Kindle and Kobo has resulted in digital book sales reaching £411 million.

Although physical book sales dipped by one per cent, total physical and digital sales increased by four per cent.

Richard Mollet, Chief Executive at The Publishers Association, said: “The Publishers Association’s Statistics Yearbook 2012 shows that British publishing is a healthy industry which continues to grow. The continued increase in digital sales across different disciplines illustrates the shift of readers to ebook reading. Such growth has been achieved as British publishers have been able to invest in new exciting, innovative products and in great authors thanks to the strong framework provided by copyright law, which continues to be the cornerstone of stability for a creative industry like publishing.”

Earlier this week, Nook cut the price of its standard eReader in a bid to make a big push in to the UK marketplace.
