Sega’s UK managing director and digital distribution director, John Clark has said that digital sales of gaming software will match or overtake retail sales within four years.

Speaking at yesterday’s London Games Conference, Clark told delegates that: “We are moving from a linear industry. There are new business models, and every time a new content delivery method appears, a new business model appears. If you don't have a DLC strategy, you probably need it.”

However, he also said that the business still needs retail in order to grow.

Citing the Sega-published Empire: Total War franchise as an example, he noted that while retail sales had been erratic, digital sales of DLC had allowed the franchise to grow, but revealed that the boxed version of the software had still outsold digital copies.
