Betaworks rebuilds Digg in just six weeks

Digg relaunches with Twitter and Facebook integration

Digg is back after being acquired by New York-based tech group Betaworks.

Entitled Digg v1, the community based news web site introduces new Twitter and Facebook integration features along with photos at the top of each headline.

"On July 20, we announced that we were turning Digg back into a startup and rebuilding it from scratch in six weeks," wrote Betaworks in a post on its Digg v1 blog today.

"After an intense month and a half, we managed to get the new Digg up and running on a fresh code base and infrastructure. We now have a solid foundation on which to build, and we expect to build fast."

Launched seven years ago, Digg claims to have generated 350 million ‘Diggs’, more than 28m story suggestions and over 40m comments.

Digg struggled to keep up with sites such as Reddit and StumbleUpon, and an unpopular redesign didn’t help matters.

Betaworks acquired Digg for a reported $500,000 to combine with its existing product News.me, far less than the $45 million investors poured into the company over the past eight years.
