PC vendor Dell is to expand the wireless options for its future laptops by installing a radio chip that utilises unused television broadcast frequencies, known as white spaces.
The move comes after the US Federal Communications Commission voted to open up the hitherto reserved frequencies.
The TV spectrum is reported to carry broadband signals further than wi-fi and will help develop the potential of smartphones.
“We intend to integrate white-space radios into future Dell products," said Dell’s director of technology policy Neeraj Srivastava. “White spaces could solve a lot of the problems of the 2.4GHz spectrum and allow for higher-bandwidth applications such as streaming audio and video.”
