Credit crunch to drive online shopping

Consumers expected to flock online this Christmas as economic conditions bite

The credit crunch is likely to result in more people shopping online this Christmas, according to the results of survey conducted by market research firm IMRG.

The report found that up to 68 per cent of shoppers are planning on making at least one purchase online this Christmas. It also found that of those planning on making a purchase, around 78 per cent planned to do at least half of their shopping online, up from 56 per cent in 2007.

Speaking to Retail Week, IMRG's chief executive James Roper said: "Christmas can be an expensive time of year and it will feel particularly so this year for many who are being squeezed in the economic slowdown.

"It's great to see the high levels of awareness among Christmas shoppers on the competitive pricing available online, an increase in those turning to etailers over the festive season and a strong satisfaction rating in the online shopping experience, especially delivery."
