Entrepeneur and 'business angel' Clive Coombes is in talks to make an offer on Comet's remaining stores.

The Sun repoprts that the businessman believes he can still turn the failing chain around.

He stated: “I don’t know if Op- Capita (the former owner) really tried, to be honest.

“We would cut down the distribution depots and trim the top levels of management.

“My message to staff? I’d tell them there’s a little bit of hope.”

Coombes owns and works as a consultant for CC Business Angels, which is already known for working with businesses in trouble.

For the Comet bid, which the Sun says is backed by private individuals, he is using a company called Meridian Wholesale.

He could potentially save up to 2,000 jobs.

The bid comes at the same time as Appliances Online has made a bid for the exclusive use of the Comet website.

Deloitte is currently working through offers.
