CompTIA CEO Todd Thibodeaux has pointed out a number of opportunities in the mobile sector for IT/technology retailers.

Speaking to PCR on a visit to the UK, Thibodeaux said: “The mobile device market is getting larger and becoming a more important part of what is happening in the IT landscape, and I think there’s a great opportunity for smaller retailers to pick up on that.”

Thibodeaux, who boasts enormous experience both with the Consumer Electronics Association and CompTIA since 2008, pointed out a number of places where retail could make money from the sector.

“First, there are the SMB to SMB purchases, because companies aren’t necessarily going to the traditional channels for those devices at the moment. Right now traditional resellers haven’t picked up on the opportunity so much, so the chance to offer it is right there for the retailer if they are interested.

“There are very lucrative repair opportunities as well, from replacing screens to batteries.

“Many of the accessories that go along with those devices have nice margins, too – it’s really about owning the mobility space and offering service plans alongside it where they can.

“It can be tough for retail to attach to things like Cloud and apps, but to be able to be seen as a training centre as well is invaluable. You only have to go to an Apple Store to see that people go there not only to buy, but also to learn how to use products.

“This is a great lesson even for smaller retailers – you can sell the hardware, service plans, accessories, and even do the training.”
