Consumers snap up Google’s TV streaming dongle

Chromecast’s Netflix promotion ends after 24 hours due to ‘overwhelming demand’

Chromecast’s free three-month Netflix promotion has proved so popular that Google has had to pull it after just one day.

With the new TV streaming dongle costing $35 from Amazon and Best Buy’s website, and three months worth of Netflix costing around $24, consumers soon realised what a bargain the deal was.

"Due to overwhelming demand for Chromecast devices since launch, the 3-month Netflix promotion is no longer available," Google said in a statement.

The Chromecast streams media via the cloud, rather than direct to the device, it plugs straight in to the HDMI port of a TV, and media can be streamed from a smartphone, tablet or computer.

The dongle is expected to hit physical Best Buy stores in the US on Sunday. As of yet there is no information about an international release date.
