Worries over low footfall this weekend as shoppers wait for reductions to kick in

Channel expresses concern over VAT delay

Concerns have been expressed that the Government’s decision not to implement VAT until Monday December 1st could have adverse affects on the number of Christmas shoppers this weekend.

Several retailers PC Retail spoke to this morning expressed anxiety over the impact on shopping numbers. Many large retailers have also expressed concerns over the potential impact, with DSGi moving to introduce the VAT cut immediately.

"The antidote to the economic downturn is as much about restoring consumer confidence as anything," said chief executive John Browett. This announcement is a welcome step, and great news for our customers. Unlike the banks we will be passing on the full price reduction immediately in all our Currys and PC World stores, as well as online including Dixons.co.uk."

However, most retailers and channel bodies welcomed other aspects of the chancellor’s pre-budget report. " Any measure that the Government takes to help small businesses should be taken at face value and embraced," Brigantia’s Iain Shaw told PC Retail. "More is always better, but something is better than nothing in my opinion."
