Steve Ballmer steals Apple's thunder with CES announcement

CES 2010: Microsoft beats Apple to ‘slate PC’ announcement

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer used his keynote speech at this year’s CES to unveil a tablet PC, in a move that threatens to steal some of the hype surrounding Apple’s rumoured iSlate device.

Due to be released later this year, the HP device was one of three products that Ballmer highlighted as an example of some of the technology expected to break in to the market this year.

Although no specs were offered, Ballmer did say that the device is “almost as portable as a phone and that’s as powerful as a PC running Windows 7.”

The announcement comes at a time when a tablet-style device is rumoured to be in the pipeline from Apple, which has enjoyed tremendous success with similar smaller devices such as the iPhone and iPod Touch.
