Carphone Warehouse has warned that it may have to shed as many as 450 jobs in the coming weeks, though it has stressed that no retail staff will be impacted by the review.

The firm was forced to admit it has been considering cutting around ten per cent of its workforce, though it has stressed that the majority of positions being cut are those in call centres set up to deal with the sheer load of enquiries for its free broadband offer in 2007.

A spokeswoman for Carphone Warehouse told The Times: "We announced in January that we would be undertaking a review of the business and aiming to make savings across the business. As part of that, 450 roles will be placed at risk."

The cuts will mainly affect its staff at its sites in Warrington and Wednesbury in the West Midlands, as well as its North Acton headquarters in West London.
