The Scottish government has renewed calls for a new .scot internet domain to be established.

The International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) will be accepting applications for new top level internet domains starting in January next year.

The not-for-profit Dot Scot Registry is behind the push for a new Scottish top level domain and has the backing from the Inverness Chamber of Commerce.

"It would give us a local identity over the internet," said chamber chief executive Stewart Nicol told the BBC.

The Scottish government has sought support from the UK government which has responsibility for internet governance.
