At the same time that Virgin has announced its upcoming 50 mbps internet service, BT has revealed that it is teaming up with the BBC and ITV networks to bring video-on-demand services to broadband.
The deal is hoped to bring the next generation of free services to carry free to air channels and on-demand TV services such as the BBC’s iPlayer and ITV Player.
Market research commissioned by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) suggested that the demand for high-definition video should set the standard for a national broadband service.
There is no confirmed launch date yet for the BT deal, as the plans are still subject to BBC Trust approval and public consultation.
