Media group hopes to challenge iTunes and Spotify with Sky Songs

BSkyB launches digital music service

BSkyB has announced the launch of its Sky Songs service this week, which it hopes will enable it to compete in the digital music sector.

Sky Songs, which will be available on a subscription basis with no funding derived from advertisements, is expected to initially offer a database of four million songs for download or streaming.

The service will go live on October 19th and will include catalogues from EMI, Sony, Universal and Warner, as well as a range of independent labels.

“Our music partners bring an outstanding catalogue and unrivalled expertise that complements Sky’s strengths in content distribution,” said Sky CEO Mike Darcey. “Sky Songs will reach out to consumers who want legitimate digital services offering choice, ease of use and great value. Offering legal access to digital music is a vital step in combating illegal downloading.”
